Author Rights!

I bumped into a physics grad student on the Dartmouth Coach earlier this week and we had some time to catch up on how things are going. I learned that he’s on his way to publishing his first academic paper! Hurray! We talked about author rights and things to look out for in a publisher’s contract. The publishing landscape is changing very rapidly and it’s hard to keep up, but you have author rights! You don’t have to sign away all your copyrights to the publisher!

But why is it important?

Because you want to retain rights to post a copy of your paper on your own website. Or you want to be able to reuse your own research in future papers! Here are some resources to be aware of:
