I struggled with creating a catchy email subject line for my outreach email. I even interviewed a couple of our Kresge student assistants for ideas about the kinds of emails they DO open to read. It’s really a hit or miss.
Then it occurred to me to format it like a check mark for a bucket list item and came up with this idea:
✓ Sophomore Summer: Get to know your Librarian!
But I wanted something that had color and stood out and it occurred to me that I should use something that represented libraries — BOOKS:
📚 Sophomore Summer: Get to know your Librarian!
I tested this in several email programs on my Mac and here are my findings:
- Gmail in Chrome browser — does not work (check mark worked though)
- Gmail in Firefox browser — does work!
- Windows Outlook — does not work
- Mac Outlook — does work!
- BWA web — does work!
- iPhone mail app — does work!
Despite its failures in some programs, I sent it. At least the students who can see it may be compelled to open the email and read it. I found the glyph through this website.
